Opercularia sp. A group of sessile peritrichs, plucked from a Great Diving beetle ♂
A microscope film, filmed with a telephone above the microscope eyepiece, at 40x
magnification. The peritrichs are making vortices, visible from the spherical golden algae
colonies Synura uvella that are thrown around as they come closer. Upon impact, an
Opercularia cell shrinks slightly and pulls in the ciliated ring, as most peritrichs
do, but the stalk remains rigid..
Note the small bell-shaped peritrich at the top of the stem, I don't know if
that's the same species, but it doesn't look like it.
