Rhantus suturalis

synonyms Rhantus pulverosus, Rhantus punctatus )
Enlarged picture of the first page. The beetle (female) hangs
with its hind tip on the water surface to refresh its air supply, as all Dytiscidae do.
The photo below shows a male specimen, recognizable by the suction hairs on the tarses of
the front and middle legs. It hangs below the surface because it is lighter than water at
the time of the photo. The claws on the hind legs support this position; if the claws are
damaged or missing, this position is not possible (Wesenberg-Lund, 1943).

Also note the double swimming hair fringe on the hind legs, the female specimens only
have the fringe on the top, as clearly visible in the photo below.
